As a devoted instructor and educator, I have a strong passion for teaching eager and committed students of all levels. I currently teach private lessons for students from beginner level to advanced. Nurturing the student's creativity is a big priority, and I strive to make sure they always feel motivated to make music. Being able to learn about music overall is important to me so I advocate to help them learn about the history and compositional theory behind the repertoire they are working on. While keeping a teacher-student relationship, I value the student being able to create their own ideas and suggestions. All in all, I am always inspired by my students and continue to learn from them as well.

I am on flute faculty at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts Extension Division. I have given workshops and masterclasses at schools such as Rutgers University, Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, Ferrum College, Utah Valley University, William Paterson University, Princeton University, and Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention, and more. My workshops and lectures have covered topics from “Achieving your best sound” to “Ensemble playing.” Having studied with great flute pedagogues, I use the knowledge I learned from them and create my own teaching style based on each of my students' individual needs. I use technical exercises with innovative craftsmanship, making sure that my students are always feeling inspired.

I cover topics from developing proper form to produce a beautiful tone, creating own personal musical ideas, and performing with self-confidence. On a more advanced scale, I also teach how to develop a helpful warm-up, how to become your own teacher, and how to prepare for an audition.

Along with private lessons, I am available for lectures, masterclasses, sectionals, and performing classes.

I am currently taking flute students of all levels in the Greater New York City area and in Central Jersey!

If you have any more questions about lessons, or would like to attend a class, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Sarah possesses a strong technique, a lovely sound with impressive flexibility and very impressive musical skills. I have had the opportunity to observe Sarah Shin’s work recently and am very impressed.
